Rick is a Principal at Kahler Leadership Group, and is responsible for business development, partnership development, and executive coaching. Rick knows from career experience how an organization can inadvertently undermine the efforts of individuals to develop and contribute their best. He helps leaders apply human performance science strategically and effectively to raise organizational performance.

Rick started his career as an engineer at Motorola working on global teams, which produced cutting-edge technology. He entered the consulting world at Neoglyphics, an early Internet systems development firm, led by early Internet business pioneer, Alex Zoghlin (Co-founder of Orbitz). Experiences at Motorola and Neoglyphics showed Rick the challenges of managing and building team performance in complex global and cross-functional organizations.

Thus, Rick’s fascination with human behavior and organizational dynamics began, and his curiosity grew when he and Bobbi launched a boutique consulting and training business in Portland, Oregon in 2001. For five years, Rick working with entrepreneurs and managers and discovered the exploding field of coaching as a way to help individuals and organizations produce change and improve performance. Coaching was not new to Rick, as he had used coaching approaches to lead teams at work, guide professional development, and coach his ultimate Frisbee teams for years; however, the formalizing of coaching skills and relationships was an exciting avenue to pursue.

To allow Bobbi to recover from dramatic health challenges, they put the business on hold and returned to Chicago to be closer to family. Rick pursued work as a consultant at Acquity Group to combine his expertise in systems, change management, and client management. He worked with Fortune 500 clients, like Motorola, General Motors, and Hewitt Assocaties on information technology strategy, global program management, and virtual team project management. He developed change management methodology for Acquity Group to help clients foster adoption of systems and organizational change.

He brings this experience to his coaching. In addition, he brings great analytical thinking and decision-making processes learned while earning his M.B.A. at the University of Chicago. Specifically, Rick has used social network analysis for developing personal networking strategy and for analyzing organizations in consulting projects.

Although many thought Rick lost to the analytical side of the universe, he is never satisfied with seeing things through one lens or applying one approach. Over his lifetime, he has, for Myers-Briggs fans, moved from ISTJ to INTP. Relentlessly curious, Rick always seeks new ways to see things, and that includes listening deeply for how his clients see their world and where they want to go. As a lifelong learner, Rick has expanded his ways of understanding and working with clients to help them see and realize new possibilities.

Rick has been coaching formally and informally for 18 years. He is certified as an Evidence-Based Coach through Fielding Graduate University.

When not working, Rick enjoys skiing, snowshoeing, biking, ultimate Frisbee and disc golf.
